Invented in 1847 by John Jaques of London, using simple symbols for each piece the design became an immediate hit and within 10 years nearly all important chess games were played with Staunton Chessmen. The set is presented in a mahogany box with brass catches. Dimensions: The King is 3.5" in height and all of the other pieces descends downward from him. This Chess Set should be used with a board 16" or larger.
