The most popular design for Chess pieces in the world today is still the John Jaques Staunton Chess Set. Invented in 1847 by John Jaques of London, using simple symbols for each piece the design became an immediate hit and within 10 years nearly all important chess games were played with Staunton Chessmen. This is still the case today. Jaques of London continues to be the leading manufacturer of quality Chess equipment and their Chess sets are used in virtually every tournaments. They are made in exactly the same materials and to the same specification as the original Boxwood and Ebony sets and they are polished by hand, with no lacquering being used. This brings on the natural colour and feel of the wood. The Staunton Club Design 3.5" King Chess Set has hand turned boxwood fine quality weighted pieces with woollen baize bases. The set is presented in a mahogany box with brass catches. Dimensions: The King is 3.5" in height and all of the other pieces descends downward from him. This Chess Set should be used with a board 16" or larger.
